Alfa Laval
CD Double-Wall Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger
The Alfa Laval CD is a double-wall copper-brazed plate heat exchanger in which every heat transfer surface consists of two plates instead of one. This twin-plate construction provides external leak detection and keeps the two fluids from mixing, while thermal performance stays close to a single-wall unit.
Product Benefits
- Built-in insurance: In duties where cross-contamination between fluids is unacceptable, the double-wall design offers protection by construction rather than by monitoring alone.
- Leaks show outside: If a plate should ever fail, the leak appears on the outside of the unit instead of passing into the other circuit.
- No performance penalty: You gain that safety margin without a meaningful loss in heat transfer performance.
- Compact CombiDryer: As a CombiDryer unit it combines this protection with a double-circuit configuration purpose-built for drying compressed air.
- Gasket-free and vacuum tolerant: Everything sits in a brazed package with no gaskets, and the design also tolerates full vacuum.
Where It's Used
- Compressed air drying: This is the CD's core application, separating humidity from compressed air using its double-circuit configuration.
- Compressed air and pneumatics: That places it in compressed air and pneumatic systems across general industry.
- Protecting downstream equipment: Dry air protects the tools, instruments and processes further along the line.
Good to Know
- Materials: Construction is stainless steel double-wall plates with copper brazing filler and stainless cover plates.
- Connections and approvals: Connections are made by soldering, and the unit carries PED and UL approvals.
- Visual leak monitoring: The double-wall principle makes leak monitoring visual and external, so a periodic check of the unit's exterior is a simple part of maintenance.
- Clean circuits last longer: As with all brazed exchangers, clean and filtered circuits are the best guarantee of long service life.
