ITT Goulds Pumps
3420 Large Capacity Double Suction Pumps
The Goulds Model 3420 is a large-capacity, single-stage, double-suction pump with a horizontally split casing and dual-volute design. It is built for heavy-duty water movement on a grand scale: the kind of duty where a mill or power station depends on one pump running for years between overhauls.
Product Benefits
- Hydraulic axial balance: At large capacities, hydraulic imbalance becomes expensive. The double-suction impeller assures hydraulic axial balance for lower thrust-bearing loads and long bearing life.
- Radial loads in check: The dual volute keeps radial loads in check.
- Faster overhauls: Suction and discharge sit in the lower casing half, so the rotor is fully accessible by lifting the top half with no piping disturbance.
- Recoverable efficiency: Renewable wear rings keep efficiency recoverable over the pump's long service life.
Where It's Used
- Mill water and headbox: In pulp and paper mills the 3420 supplies mill water and headbox duty.
- Utility water services: It also covers cooling tower circulation, wash and waste water, ash sluicing, and fire pump service.
- Heavy-duty installations: The same design carries heavy-duty industrial, municipal, and power-generation water services, mounted horizontally or vertically as the station layout requires.
Good to Know
- Materials track water chemistry: Constructions come bronze-fitted, stainless-fitted, or all-stainless, with cast iron or stainless casings and a carbon steel shaft, letting materials track the water chemistry.
- Sealing choice: Sealing is a free choice between packing and mechanical seals, and steel casings take raised-face flanges.
- Installation matters: As with any large double-suction machine, steady suction conditions and correct pipework into the lower-half nozzles are the keys to trouble-free running.
