HSU Submersible Pumps

The Goulds HSU is a submersible hydro-solids pump with a fully recessed impeller, built to pass large, stringy, fibrous and abrasive solids without clogging. Because the whole unit sits in the liquid, it can be dropped into virtually any sump with no dry-mounted structure above.

Product Benefits

  • Recessed impeller: The fully recessed impeller sits out of the main flow path, so most solids pass through the concentric casing without ever striking the impeller: the classic answer to rags, fiber and debris that jam conventional non-clog pumps.
  • Large solids passage: It passes impressively large solids for its class.
  • Simple installation: Being fully submersible, the HSU needs no sump-top mounting plate, long shaft or separate motor stand: integral support legs and a cast-in discharge elbow make installation as simple as setting it in the pit and connecting the discharge.
  • Practical retrofit: That flexibility makes it a practical retrofit for problem sumps.

Where It's Used

  • Dirty mill sumps: In pulp and paper mills, typical duties are wood yard sumps, reclaim sumps, sludge pits and drainage sumps: services full of bark, fiber, grit and unpredictable debris.
  • Waste and effluent: Its solids-passing character also suits general waste and effluent handling around the mill.
  • Last-resort sump pump: Fluindo supplies the HSU for the pulp and paper industry, wherever a sump collects the solids nothing else will pump.

Good to Know

  • Material options: Choices run from cast iron through high-chrome iron, CD4MCu and 316 stainless steel, so the wet end can be matched to abrasive or corrosive pumpage.
  • Efficiency trade-off: The recessed-impeller principle trades a little hydraulic efficiency for its clog resistance, a worthwhile exchange in dirty services.
  • Certified motors: Motors are UL and CSA approved explosion-proof and conform to recognized NEMA, IEEE, ANSI and NEC standards, which matters in classified areas.
  • Specify for the solids: Selecting materials against the actual solids in the sump is the main point to settle at specification time.
